I have had about 15 yrs of experience in the industry, during all thru my experience I have been deliberating with myself on what is it that is most difficult and I should focus on.
There are numerous discussion that are happening on this because attitude is such a vast work and encompasses so many things like empathy, listening, positivity, sharing, negotiating, handling conflict so on so forth.
My personal feeling is that Attitude is something which requires a long time and less age to work on. In ideal situation I would want to see basic education system addressing this issue so that every individual when gets older gets a good attitude to work.
Another thing that relates to this problem is that (it might be specific to country culture) very often (it is not a generic statement because exceptions are there so no offense to teacher who are good) people who have not done much in life or does not have very major experience in child psychology becomes teacher. This eventually results in getting less people in the right position to inculcate the right behavior.

Nitin,
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts! All of us grapple with attitude related issues from time to time and dealing with them is the most unproductive aspect of any software engagement.
We all know that software engineering is whole lot about social engineering as well and the teams that succeed in building software are generally cohesive teams.
Thus, it becomes imperative that most of the people in the team are good "team players". Unfortunately, I think one really can't change people's natural style of working thus emphasis has to given about this at the time of recruiting. One should always look out for both attitude and aptitude.

Hence goes the saying, "Your attitude determines your altitude".
ReplyDeleteAs you correctly pointed out, every effort should be made to imbibe this 'awareness' into a individual as early as possible. However, attitude, like maturity, can not be taught by somebody - it comes automatically with exposure. The wider a person's horizon, more realistic he is and hence his attitude. More often than not, people who have attitude problem are the ones who live in the cocoon of their illusionary world beyond which, they believe, nothing exists.
It is also true that many teachers are not equipped to deal with such finer aspects. One reason for this is that, teaching is no longer a serious career option. Somebody said, if you want to build the country, provide higher salaries to teachers and policemen. Teaching needs to be made an attractive career (both in monetary sense and otherwise) to improve this condition.
Despite all these, there are still many good teachers around who are silently but effectively doing their good work. I am sure each one of us has seen such teachers at some point of our childhood.
Dear Nitin,
ReplyDeleteHuman Behavior is an enigmatic thing which is out of any theories, concept and science. A human behaves differently in the same situation. It is a concept which is regulated by some unfathomable power which may remain suspense for this universe as long as it exists.
On the other hand I personally understand; man never fights, it is his thought which forces him to do so. It is advisable to design a mix green strategy for any organisation or society which may call a religion in past world.
Are we unselfish? That is the question. If we are, you will be perfect without reading a single religious book, without going into a single church or temple.
Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting. A good objective of leadership is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and to help those who are doing well to do even better.
"I am the thread that runs through all these pearls," and each pearl is a religion or even a sect thereof. Such are the different pearls, and God is the thread that runs through all of them; most people, however, are entirely unconscious of it.
